Most tailbone pain and problems are fully resolvable by specialised physiotherapy

Welcome at my website about tailbone problems. An issue that is not understood by most doctors and therapists, but with the right knowledge and expertise, often something not too different of other joint problems in the body where there is a lack of freedom of movement. Therefor it is also often easy to treat; in most cases even painless and with quick results. Athough this might sound to good to be true, these results are also experienced by other specialised therapists on a dailt basis and mainly a lot of patients, even after many years of pain.
You can find all you need to know about tailbone problems and the treatment on this website.
Are you looking for a therapist to help you?
At the page Appointment you will find where I work in Amsterdam and how to find a colleague elsewhere in the Netherlands.
A patient visits a the therapist…
For already quite some time there is an annoying pain in a spot that doesn’t feel comfortable in to tell everybody about. It is pretty sensitive by pressing on it and the pain limits daily life and work because sitting comfortable and pain free isn’t really possible anymore.
The GP and physio were consulted but despite the clear indication of the location of the pain, when it becomes more of less and what the restrictions are, no one in healthcare seems to be able to explain what is going on and what can be done about it. The doctor and therapist say that there is nothing that can be done for tailbone pain and these problems just take a long time to heal. None of the healthcare professionals even touches or examined the tailbone itself and the treatment at the physio was aimed more at the muscles and joints around it.
Because the problems don’t become less, the GP decides on a referral to the hospital. The X-rays and scans don’t show anything special according to the doctors and all they can do is treat the pain and inflammation with medication, orally or through local injection. A structural solution for the problems and an explanation for what is actually going on, still isn’t provided. Because the specialists say there is nothing to be done, except maybe an impactful surgical removal of the tailbone, the treatment path stops and all that remains is trying to adjust life as much as possible to not being able to sit properly.
The pain and restrictions become more and more impactful and this leads to an online search to see if there maybe is a treatment option available. And it becomes clear that there actually exist a specialised therapy for this problem…
This is what a significant part of the people that consult me for tailbone pain share with me during the intake. More than half already have their problems for at least a year. One in five already had at least one local injection at the tailbone, that at best provided a temporary relief or didn’t help at all. Some even received the advice to have the tailbone surgically removed.
Through this website, my Instagram account, my podcast, enthusiastic patients, therapists that refer patients to me and because people nowadays start doing online research themselves sooner (where ChatGPT regularly likes to recommend me), the last few years I see also people in earlier stages of their problems. This therapy isn’t new, is being done since the seventh century already and has comparable or even better results than the medical interventions, but unfortunately isn’t known under most doctors, therapists and often even the pelvic therapists.
Tailbone pain / Coccydynia

Tailbone pain, also called coccydynia, mostly is a very unpleasant problem. It is a complaint that can lead to a lot of pain and strong limitations in daily life. Sitting is mostly the main problem. The onset can be obvious like a fall on the buttocks or giving birth, but often there is no onbvious reason why the problems started.
In the medical as well as therapeutical world, there is as mentioned above, still little known about what can be done about these problems. In their educations the doctor, physiotherapist and manual therapist mostly just learn that the tailbone ‘is there’ and often that’s about all that is mentioned about it. Even the pelvic therapist receives little or no training in treating the tailbone pain itself and tries to influence it mainly through exercises or therapy of the pelvic floor musculature.
As described above, this results in patients that often visited a lot of doctors and therapists with unsatisfactory and inconclusive findings and treatments (if they received any at all). And where in that process the tailbone often wasn’t even touched.
The often long trajectory to find help, leads in a lot of cases to restlessness and frustration. One of my patients, stated this very spot on:
‘Tailbone pain is a very unpleasant problem,
but what I find most unpleasant is that nobody seems to understand it
and is able to tell me what’s the problem and how to solve it.’
After a few sessions the problems were fully gone. Just like in more than 75% of the patients I see and finish the treatment trajectory. Even that I often see the worst cases in the country, there are on average four to five treatments necessary to solve the problem.

Mostly people don’t end up by a specialised therapist but a only treated in the medical field. Here treatments are mostly limited to painkillers (what is solely focused on the symptom relieve) or trying to interrupt the a disrupted pain cycle through injections. These often give a quick relief, but mostly also just temporarily. Research shows that after 3 years, only 15% of people still experiences a beneficial effect of an injection. Because it is not aimed at treating the underlying cause of the problem, this approach in most cases doesn’t offer a structural solution unfortunately.
Where of course no heathcare provider has a 100% success rate, tailbone pain can be mostly very well treated in a therapeutic way if done by someone with specialised knowledge and skills. This is unfortunately rare and mostly people find such an expert after doing their own research, simply because there is so little known about this problem amongst healthcare professionals and scientific research in this field is very limited. Reading this and visiting this website means you found a place with a lot of information and recourses about tailbone pain and the treatment options. You will find where to find me and also other colleageus trained in treating tailbone pain, and hear from experts about their way of approaching tailbone pain in my podcast.
It is good to see that sometimes also the mainstream media is picking up that there is a treatment available for these problems. By clicking on the link below, you will find an article in Het Algemeen Dagblad (which also was published in the Belgium newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws) from June 2023 about tailbone problems. Unfortunately it is only available in Dutch.
